How to Develop a Prayer Partnership

How often have you heard the comment, "I'm too busy to pray"? The better response would be, "I'm too busy to not pray"! Prayer changes things and gives us perspective during the pressures of life. Jesus said, "Also, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about something and pray for it, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. This is true because if two or three people come together in my name, I am there with them" (Matthew 18:19-20 NCV).  Here is a simple plan for forming a prayer partnership . . . particularly if you're life is on overload!

How often should we meet and for how long?

  • Plan to meet once a week for at least 15 to 20 minutes. You may wish to go longer, but it is best to allow that to develop spontaneously.
  • Plan to meet once a week for 4 to 6 weeks, then evaluate if you wish to continue.

When and where should we meet to pray?

  • Be creative as to where and when. Try meeting outdoors in a park or by a lake, weather permitting. Take a walk together. Or enjoy breakfast at a favorite restaurant followed by prayer.
  • If it is difficult to get together during the week, meet your prayer partner before or after church. A small group meeting during the week is an excellent setting for forming a prayer partnership.

What should we pray for?

  • Ask each other three questions, and then go to prayer:
How is God at work in your life?
What is God teaching you about Himself?
How can I pray for you?
  • As time permits include other prayer requests.

How should I select a prayer partner?

  • Ask God to lead you to a prayer partner.
  • Moms and dads, ask your son or daughter to be your prayer partner.
